Joy Buolamwini Unveiling Hidden Bias in AI Technology”

Joy Buolamwini, one of the few black women in AI, is using art and research to show the social impact of AI. She also created the Algorithmic Justice League that seeks to confront Society with Justice in Technology. Describing the racial and gender biases that exist in algorithms which are used in the system developed by giants such as Google, Microsoft, and Amazon, her TED Talk video, which has attracted over a million views, contributes to raising awareness about algorithmic bias.

The investigations that Buolamwini conducted at MIT are famous around the world–the study has traveled to over 40 countries, to forums on the prospects of artificial intelligence at the World Economic Forum and the United Nations.

A science journalist, Buolamwini uses creative skills to explain using technologies in making people aware of the prejudice in Artificial Intelligence. Her spoken word visual audit “AI, Ain’t I A Woman?” showcases how AI is blind to images of famous black women, such as Oprah Winfrey or the body and features of Serena Williams. She is best known for such exhibits as the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Barbican Centre United Kingdom. In addition, three op-eds for TIME Magazine and The New York Times emphasize Buolamwini’s dedication to advocating for algorithmic justice within the tech industry.

Buolamwini is a Rhodes Scholar and Fulbright Fellow, who was covered by Bloomberg, Forbes, and BBC, among others. She has degrees from Oxford, MIT, and Georgia Tech and Fortune’s, ‘the conscience of the AI revolution.’ Joy Buolamwini possesses an enormous outreach in influence together with a compelling vision as she bombards the prejudice and injustice that characterises modern, enriched technology.
